What is Bowen Therapy?

The Bowen Technique was developed in Australia by Tom Bowen and is a unique form of neuromuscular repatterning that works through the nervous system on both structural and energetic levels.

It is a gentle, non-invasive therapy that stimulates the body’s natural healing response using precise, rolling movements over muscles, tendons, and fascia.

Unlike other physical therapies, Bowen Therapy does not require forceful manipulation, deep pressure, or vigorous muscle work. Instead, it activates key points—“hubs” where fascia, muscles, tendons, and nerves communicate—helping the body correct misalignments, relieve tension, and restore function.

How Does Bowen Therapy Work?

Bowen Therapy is based on the principle that small, targeted movements can create a profound impact on the nervous system.

✔ Misalignments self-correct without forceful adjustments.
✔ Muscle tension eases, improving lymphatic flow without deep massage.
✔ Fascia rehydrates and adhesions release without excessive pressure.
✔ Meridians show immediate balance without acupuncture-like stimulation.
✔ Emotional shifts occur naturally, but without intentional mind-body therapy.

A Bowen session consists of gentle rolling movements followed by pauses, allowing the body time to integrate the changes. This rhythmic approach relaxes the nervous system and stimulates self-healing. Many clients fall asleep during the session, entering a deep state of relaxation.

Benefits of Bowen Therapy

Bowen Therapy is known for its long-lasting and profound results, even for chronic conditions. Some key benefits include:

✔ Relief from back, neck, and joint pain
✔ Reduction of muscle tension and inflammation
✔ Improved posture and flexibility
✔ Enhanced lymphatic drainage and circulation
✔ Relief from stress, migraines, and TMJ dysfunction
✔ Support for digestive, respiratory, and immune health
✔ Safe for all ages, including infants, pregnant women, and seniors

Conditions Bowen Therapy Can Help With

Bowen Therapy is effective for a wide range of physical and internal conditions, including:

🔹 Musculoskeletal Issues – Back pain, neck pain, scoliosis, sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome
🔹 Sports Injuries – Sprains, strains, and post-injury rehabilitation
🔹 TMJ Misalignment & Jaw Pain
🔹 Headaches & Migraines
🔹 Digestive Disorders – Bloating, IBS, and constipation
🔹 Respiratory Conditions – Asthma, sinus congestion, and colic in babies
🔹 Stress, Fatigue, and Sleep Issues

What to Expect During a Session

✅ Session Duration: Each session lasts 45–60 minutes.
✅ Treatment Process:

  • Performed over light clothing (no need to undress).

  • Gentle rolling movements are applied to specific areas of the body.

  • Short pauses between movements allow the body to integrate the response.

Aftercare & Post-Treatment Guidelines

To maximize the benefits of Bowen Therapy, it’s important to follow a few simple aftercare steps. Since Bowen Therapy works subtly over time, certain activities can interfere with the body’s natural healing response.

On the Day of Your Treatment:

🚶‍♂️ Movement is key – Avoid sitting for more than 30 minutes at a time. Walk around every half-hour to maintain proper circulation. Lying down is fine for as long as you like.
🌡️ Avoid extreme temperatures – No hot baths, heating pads, liniments, or ice packs. A brief warm shower is okay.
🏋️ Skip intense exercise – No strenuous workouts for at least 48 hours. Light movement, especially walking, is encouraged.

For the Next 7 Days:

❌ Avoid other physical therapies – No massage, acupuncture, chiropractic adjustments, or strong heat/cold therapy (hot tubs, ice packs, long hot showers).
🦵 Mind your posture – Avoid crossing your legs to maintain proper circulation and energy flow. When getting up from bed, a chair, or a car, distribute your weight evenly on both feet.
💧 Stay hydrated – Drink plenty of purified or spring water (half your body weight in ounces daily). Avoid tap water. Sipping small amounts frequently is better than drinking large amounts at once.
🦷 After TMJ treatment – Avoid biting hard foods like apples, nuts, or candy for about four days. Cut meat into small pieces and refrain from large yawns.

Possible Reactions & Healing Signs

It’s normal to experience temporary hot and cold flushes, mild headaches, emotional releases, or shifting body aches as your body adjusts. These are positive signs that healing is in progress!

By following these aftercare instructions, you’ll allow Bowen Therapy to work more effectively and experience longer-lasting relief and wellness.
